Emergency Medical Services
(EMS) underwent a major reform in the last few years. Prof. Sallam expanded the emergency services network, added wireless
connections, and equipped ambulance services. New concepts were introduced in the EMS such as mobile cars for critically ill
patients, mobile operations units, mobile units for maternal services and mobile incubation units. He also provided additional
training programs for emergency care personnel.
Air ambulance services constitute a concept for exceptional performance in the
most severe environmental conditions. The need for such a technology is mandatory to achieve the highest
level of quality health care in Egypt. The Ministry of Health and Population has subsequently adapted to the growing demand
for air ambulance, which lead to the promulgation of the Presidential Decree No. 168/1999, May 20th 1999, on establishing
the Air Ambulance Service in Egypt. Landing sites were prepared in several hospitals: Luxor International Hospital, Sharm
El-Sheikh Hospital, Wady El-Natroon Hospital and El-Salam Hospital.
Marine
ambulance services provided a reliable mean for ambulation of critical cases resulting from accidents in the Red Sea, the
Mediterranean or the River Nile either to save the lives of many where time plays a major role for their survival, or to operate
on the scene of the accident, or to transport patients to the nearest equipped facility.
